The pre-flight reading list
How does a travel eSIM work?
Understand digital SIMs, data-only travel packages and the checks to make before buying.
A digital SIM, a separate plan
An eSIM lets a supported device download a mobile plan without inserting a physical SIM card. The plan still connects through a mobile network. It does not create coverage where no supported network is available.
What you are buying
A travel package may provide data only. Check whether calls, SMS or a local number are included. Messaging apps can use internet data, but traditional phone calls and SMS depend on the line and its plan.
Installation and activation are different
Installation adds the profile to your phone. The validity period may begin on installation, manual activation or first connection to a supported network. Read the package instructions before starting.
Four checks before checkout
Confirm your exact device supports eSIM, it is unlocked, your destination is explicitly included, and the allowance lasts for your full trip. Save the provider’s support instructions for use offline.
Official instructions
For device-specific details, consult Apple’s international eSIM guidance and your device manufacturer and carrier. Settings and availability can change.
