How to avoid unwanted roaming charges
Prepare your Canadian phone for travel and understand why data settings alone do not control every charge.
Check benefits before changing settings
Review your Canadian plan’s included destinations and roaming options. Ask what triggers a daily charge, how a chargeable day is defined and how calls, texts, voicemail and Wi-Fi calling are billed abroad.
Choose the correct data line
Set your travel eSIM as the cellular data line and disable cellular data switching where available. Turn off data roaming on the Canadian line if you do not intend to use roaming data. Follow the travel provider’s separate roaming instructions.
Think beyond mobile data
Keeping your Canadian line enabled may allow voice and text activity. Data roaming off is not a guarantee of zero charges. If you do not need the Canadian line, turning it off is a more direct way to prevent that line connecting; this also affects access to calls and verification texts.
Prepare a backup
Save maps, tickets and support information offline. Download large updates on Wi-Fi and review app background data. Keep track of your travel package allowance and expiry.
Verify before departure
Device and carrier rules differ. Confirm the configuration with your carrier, especially if you need Canadian-number calls or SMS while abroad. Do not rely on Wi-Fi calling as a blanket guarantee against charges.
